Pdf Summary
This article discusses the importance of resident participation in the Political Action Committee (PAC) for professional advocacy and ensuring access to quality musculoskeletal care. The study aimed to determine if faculty contribution-matching would increase donation rates and amounts among orthopedic surgery residents at a single institution, as well as identify barriers to PAC participation and explore resident perceptions of a faculty contribution-matching program. The study found that resident participation in the PAC increased from 10% to 95% following the introduction of a faculty contribution-matching program. Barriers to participation included time constraints and difficulty accessing the PAC Web portal. The study also found that 94% of nonresponders made joining the PAC a priority after learning about the contribution-matching program. Overall, residents believed that professional activism was important but ranked it lower in priority compared to other professional duties. The study recommends that residency programs institute faculty contribution-matching and assist residents in accessing the PAC Web portal to facilitate resident involvement in the PAC. The authors highlight the need to increase resident participation in the PAC to ensure the successful advocacy of orthopedic surgeons and access to high-quality musculoskeletal care.
