Pdf Summary
The relationship between hand surgeons and industry plays a crucial role in the advancement of patient care. This collaboration encompasses various aspects such as medical education, technology development, research, and patient education. While both physicians and industry strive towards the same goal of improving patient care, it is important to recognize and manage conflicts of interest that may arise in this relationship.

Multiple guidelines exist to regulate the relationship between physicians and industry. The American Society for Surgery of the Hand (ASSH) code of ethics emphasizes the paramount responsibility of hand surgeons towards their patients. It acknowledges that conflicts of interest are inherent in the physician-patient relationship and should be disclosed and managed in the best interest of the patient.

The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) has also developed guidelines regarding relationships with industry. These guidelines state that industry support to physicians is acceptable if it has substantial educational value and improves patient care. However, any financial support or gifts received from industry should not influence the physician's treatment decisions or compromise patient care.

In 2007, the Department of Justice (DOJ) concluded an investigation into relationships between orthopedic surgeons and major hip and knee implant manufacturers. The companies involved were found to have created consulting agreements with surgeons as inducements to use their products. As a result, these companies entered into settlement agreements and corporate integrity agreements with the government to rectify their practices.

To address potential conflicts of interest, various institutions and professional societies have adopted strict policies. These include policies that prohibit gifts from industry and require disclosure of financial relationships. The Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) also ensures that industry involvement in educational activities does not sway the content or bias the faculty.

Overall, collaboration between hand surgeons and industry is crucial for innovation and advancements in patient care. However, it is important to manage conflicts of interest and uphold ethical standards to ensure that the best interests of the patient are prioritized.
